The maiden edition of the Junior Olympics begins today Friday,17th December 2021 at Paa Joe park at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
The Junior Olympics is an athletics competition organized by Legon Creative Athletics Club (LCAC) and SeedAfrique in collaboration with (KNUST) to unearth talent in the country and help children develop interest for the game.
Race Categories are:
Kids Race – (U-10 – 60m and U-13 kids race (100m and 200)
Youth Race – U-17 (100m and 200m)
Junior Race – U-20 (100m, 400m and Long Jump)
Seniors Race – (100m, 400m , 4 x 100m Relay, 4 x 400m relay, 4 x 400m Mixed Relay)
Ghana’s record holder Benjamin Azamati would be competing in 4×100 relay.
Africa’s third fastest woman Grace Obour is also in action.
Coach Elorm Amenakpor who doubles as member of the organizing committee said the competition is in Kumasi because of the renovation works at the Legon Stadium ahead of the 2023 All-African games and the fact that Kumasi is the home of athletics in Ghana.
“ you know the Legon Stadium is being prepared for the 2023 All African Games that’s how we sent the program to Kumasi .
So it’s not that the Kumasi is the focus but we cant deny the fact that Kumasi is the hub of Athletics in Ghana at is where most of the athletes are coming from and for now we have about 350 athletes registered and the number keeps growing”
