The Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Mr Kofi Asare following the figures of pupils sitting for the 2020 BECE announced by President Akufo-Addo asked where the extra 50,000 food or students are.
His Excellency Akufo-Addo in his 15th televised nations address said the Gender Minister has been instructed to ensure all the 584,000 final years JHS students in both public and private schools are given one hot meal each day from Monday, August 24 to until the end of BECE on September 18.
According to Nana Akufo-Addo, 584,000 from both public and private Junior High Schools were preparing to sit for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) across the country.
However, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) in separate posts have indicated 531,705 sat for the national examination.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) in its best wishes message said “As 531,705 candidates begin to write 2020 BECE, the Ghana Education Service wishes you all the best in your examinations”.
The non-profit-making organization in a blog post on its official website also said “the candidature for this year’s examination is 531,705. Out of the total number, 269,419 are males while 262,286 are females, drawn from 17,440 participating schools”.
But, the Executive Director of the Africa Education Watch on social media has asked if JHS 3 Students are the same as BECE Candidates.
According to him, the Ghana Education Service (GES) contradicts the number churned out by the President. He noted that GES puts JHS 3 Students (BECE Candidates) at 531, 705., while WAEC also puts the number of BECE Candidates, both public and private, at 531,705.
Mr Kofi Asare’s is at this stage asking what is the actual number of JHS 3 Students enjoying the free meals? Is it the President’s 584,000 or GES’ 531,705?
Meanwhile, the Gender Minister has indicated her Ministry has since complied with the President’s directive, which suggests she is cooking for 584,000 students? If so, where is the extra 50,000 food or students?
