Shut down schools to protect students – NDC COVID-19 team to Gov’t

The opposition National Democratic Congress’ COVID-19 technical team has following the reported locally transmitted coronavirus cases in some Senior High Schools petitioned the Akufo-Addo government to shut down schools to prevent another pandemic in schools.
The NDC coronavirus technical team in a statement called on the government to value the lives of the students by considering a school shut down as cases were fast spreading among students in various schools across the country.
Currently, 13 final year students in various Senior High Schools in the country have reportedly tested positive for the novel coronavirus killer disease.
A joint statement issued by the Ghana Education Service and Ghana Health Service copied to Georgeweb.org confirmed that six students of the Accra Girls Senior high School tested positive for the virus.
The statement further disclosed that a teacher and spouse at the Accra Girls SHS had also tested positive for COVID-19 that has claimed 139 lives of the time writing this post.
Georgeweb.org can also confirm that two students of Odorgonor SHS and three students of the Konongo Wesley SHS had tested positive for the virus.
However, the chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the statement condemned the government for ignoring it’s earlier advice that the partial school reopening would have a negative effect on the side of students and the country as a whole.
“The lives of Ghanaian students, teachers, and non-teaching staff should be valued equally, and the Government must take immediate steps to reverse its decision and to begin the process of returning students to their homes.

“This will necessarily include mass testing of students to ascertain their COVID-19 status before they are released to their parents, to minimize the risk of exporting cases from campuses to communities.” the chairman said as quoted by StarrFM
