NDC is opposed to the Public University Bill – Prof Jane Naana

A leading member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang has disclosed her party is in opposition to the passage of the pending Public universities bill in Ghana’s Parliament.
According to the former UCC Vice-Chancellor, the Public University Bill when approved will give His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo the power to appoint and fire a Vice-Chancellor of any public university.
Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang on social media explained it will also allow the sector minister to give policy direction to the universities which will have to be compiled with, a move the Minority and the teacher unions has kicked against as they believe it will compromise academic freedom.
Meanwhile, the former Education Minister had earlier condemned the central government’s decision to pass the Bill into Law, Jane Naana speaking at Enchi in the Aowin constituency said it will be harmful for the Akufo-Addo to politicised the management of public universities.
According to her, the management or administration of a university has nothing to do with politics, thus the decision must be rescind.

The running mate advised the Akufo-Addo led government to focus on how to produce universities graduates with skills to solve the country’s current challenges.
