The Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr John Dramani Mahama has said reports indicating he will cancel the Akufo-Addo government’s Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy are lies.
The former President explained he is in support of the policy but against the implementation process that has been disorganized and has had a number of shortfalls which in his next term of Office in 2021 will make it better than before.
According to Flagbearer, the government’s use of the double-track system to enrol more students has burden parents as they have to pay extra cost for the tuition of their wards who have to stay at home for three months before they go to school.
Speaking further, he said “Free SHS has come to stay. If anyone comes to you that I, John Dramani Mahama, the son of E.A. Mahama is going to cancel FREE SHS, tell that person he or she is a bloody liar. What I am against is the poor implementation that has put a lot of burden on parents”.
Meanwhile, John Mahama’s NDC in their 2016 campaign message said the implementation of the program by the Akufo-Addo led NPP government was impossible but said NDC’s progressively Free SHS will be possible.
However, in 2017 September, the Akufo-Addo administration successfully introduced the Free SHS policy to enable all qualified Ghanaian students to continue their education in Senior High School (SHS) with no cost.
