The National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Henry Nana Boakye after saying SHS students with COVID-19 brought the virus from home has again said the government will not close down just because some 112 students have tested positive for COVID-19.
According to Henry Nana Boakye, there have been continual calls from various concern groups, the National Council Of Parent Teacher Associations of Ghana, and even the opposition NDC party petitioning the government to consider the closing down to protect other students from contracting the virus.
However, the Youth Organiser said the Akufo-Addo government won’t consider their request just because 112 students who brought the virus from home have tested positive.
The National Youth Organiser speaking at the “Youth Must Know” series in Kumasi condemned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) saying they are loud in making the call just for their parochial political interest.
“The other day the NDC held a press conference where they called for senior high schools to be shut down because there have been someone or two reported cases. What they said is not based on any scientific research and nor based on any health studies but rather their parochial political interest just to put fear in parents. When you look at the number of students and teachers in our schools they add up to 580,000, the number of students who have been infected by COVID-19 and are asymptomatic is 112, with 4 teachers infected. The NDC is saying because of these 116 infected persons we should let 580,000 students leave the schools and go home. What the NDC has forgotten is that any student who has contracted the disease got it from home and took it to the school.” he said as quoted by KasapaFM
Meanwhile, the Deputy Health Minister, Dr. Okoe Boye in an interview monitored by Georgeweb.org said the Government of Ghana will only consider a school closure if cases of the novel disease go beyond 15 percent of a school’s population.
The Deputy Health Minister gave an instance that “if you have 500 students in school and 35 tests positive for the virus representing seven percent of the number, We either dismiss them to go home or find a way to deal with them separately. The remaining is 7 percent. If you have 14 or 15 percent of the school population then it is alarming”.
He continued that “And the second one which is even the most alarming category is when morbidity is more than half the number you have. If half of your cases are sick, it means there might be many out there that you’ve not picked,”
