NSFAS: How to apply for Financial Assistance 2021

What is NSFAS

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a financial aid program established by the South African government to help students from low-income and working-class households in their pursuit of higher education.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) was established in terms of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Act 56 of 1999).

Documents need for NSFAS Application

The documents that are required to apply for funding during the National Student Financial Aid Scheme applications are as follows

  • Copy of student’s ID (if they have a Smart ID card, both sides should be visible on the copy)
  • Copy of students parent/s / Guardian or spouse ID.
  • Proof of income (where applicable)

Who Qualifies for NSFAS Funding

To find out if you qualify to apply during the NSFAS application window, check the requirement of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme.

  • Be a South African Citizen or a permanent resident Be registered at any of the public Universities for 2021
  • Have a combined household income of not more than R350 000 per annum
  • Have a combined household income of not more than R600 000 per annum for persons living with disabilities.
  • SASSA recipients automatically qualify on financial eligibility.
  • Have a valid email address.
  • Have his/her own cellphone number.

 The Applicants are required to get the abovementioned documents before beginning their applications for NSFAS.  NSFAS in a social media sighted by Georgeweb.org said they will only accept applications received from registered university students who were unable to apply in the 2021 academic year.

How to apply for NSFAS Applications

To apply for NSFAS, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, you need an NSFAS account. Follow the guide below to get one

  • Go to www.nsfas.org.za
  • Click register
  • Complete the required fields (ID number, cellphone and email adress)
  •  Upload a copy of your ID or birth certificate. If you are uploading a copy of a Smart ID, please ensure that both sides are visible on the copy.

 A One-Time Pin to activate the account will be sent to the contact number you submitted. Once you have created a myNSFAS profile, You will then be able to apply online by following the few steps below:

• Click on ‘Apply’

• Complete all the required fields where applicable

 • Upload all supporting documents

 • A reference number will be sent to your cellphone number and email address

How to re-register your myNSFAS account

To access your funding progress through your myNSFAS account, you are required to register or re-register a myNSFAS account:

  • Go to www.nsfas.org.za
  • Click myNSFAS tab
  • Click register
  • Tick the box to allow NSFAS to verify your details
  • Then capture ID number as it is stated on your ID document
  • Type in your full names and surname as per your ID number
  • Type in your current email address
  • Confirm your email address
  • Type in your cellphone number
  • Create a password
  • Confirm password
  • Upload ID Copy
  • Click register
  • OTP will be sent to the email and cell number provided (this OTP expires after 24 hours)
  • Type in the OTP and Click submit
  • You have now completed your re-registration

TO COMPLETE REGISTERATION YOU WILL NEED A COPY OF YOUR ID. FOR USERS WITH THE ID CARD MAKE SURE THAT YOU UPLOAD A COPY REFLECTING BOTH SIDES OF YOUR ID CARD.

How to Update your NSFAS cell phone number

Students who wish to change their contact details can do so by:

  • Login to my.nsfas.org.za
  • On the already registered tab
  • Enter your username and Password Click on sign in button
  • Click on my personal details
  • Go to the cellphone number section
  • Delete and remove and type in the new cellphone number Click on update details
  • OTP will be sent to your new number
  • Enter OTP and submit

If funded, they do not have to apply. Once funded, NSFAS will migrate funding to the other years to continue funding the students.

FAQ: Will NSFAS back-pay for students who have already been registered to institutions? Eligible students will be funded and NSFAS will pay for the costs of the 2021 academic year. This will be done once the registration data has been submitted by the institutions.
