According to the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) about 17,440 private and public Junior High schools in the country have benefited from President Akufo-Addo’s free hot meal initiative.
His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo in his 15th televised address to the nation following reports indicating that students were going hungry in complying with COVID-19 safety protocols instructed the Gender Ministry to prepare one hot meal each day for students and staff till the end of the 2020 BECE.
Speaking in an interview with the Accra-based Peace FM monitored by Georgeweb.org, the Gender Minister, Mrs Cynthia Mamle Morrison said her outfit was ready for distribution of the meal, she added that the first meal “Jollof” rice and an egg, would be served across the country.
According to her, their monitoring team, representatives of the Ministry and Zonal coordinators were all at post monitoring the distribution.
“All caterers in the existing school feeding schools have taken their position across the country. The non-school feeding schools would be captured so far as there are form three students”, she said.
She said they were working in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Health and Finance, adding that the meals are being funded from the Ministry’s feeding programme budget for the year.
Mrs Morrision noted meals on the menu include Banku, Beans, Tuo Zaafi, Yam, Waakye among other local foods. This is to allow the caterers to cook meals with ingredients that are readily available in their region
