Robert Matthew Van Winkle, best known as Vanilla Ice, was born on October 31, 1967, in Dallas, Texas. 

According to Ice, he didn’t see his biological father, so his mother was the one who named him.

When Vanilla Ice was four years old, his mother got divorced. So he grew up moving between Dallas and Miami, where his new stepfather was working at a car dealership.

The lyrics describe Ice and Shay on a drug run that ends in a drive-by shooting while praising Ice’s rhyming skills. 

He got a manager who was also the owner of the club Ice was performing his rap battle. The Manager saw great potentials in Ice after listening to his demo tape and signed a contract in 1987.

He was not well known until 1989 when the independent record label Ichiban Records released “Play That Funky Music” as the A-side of the single and Vanilla Ice’s song “Ice Ice Baby” as the B-side.

They gave it to a D.J. at a Georgia radio station to air the single “Play That Funky Music”, but the D.J. accidentally played “Ice Ice Baby.” The audience got traction for “Ice Ice Baby”, and it became a hit song.

This made Suge Knight furious and forced Vanilla Ice to sign the right over “Ice Ice Baby.” Van Winkle’s debut album “To the Extreme” is the fastest-selling hip hop album of all time.
