National President of UTAG faces impeachment for supporting Public Universities Bill

The University of Ghana chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has released a notice indicating that it has begun processes to impeach the National President of UTAG, Prof Charles Ofosu Marfo, accusing him of opposing the interest of the association in connection of the Public Universities Bill.

The Chapter is accusing their leader of “consistently misrepresenting and sidelining UG-UTAG’s position on the Public Universities Bill in his public engagements” by making arguments that they desire that the bill be passed with the input of UTAG when their position is that the bill is done away with.

The Legon chapter is accusing their President of “habitually misrepresenting and sidelining UG-UTAG’s position on the Public Universities Bill in his public engagements” by making arguments that they hope that the bill is passed with the input of UTAG meanwhile they are against the passage of the Bill.

University of Ghana UTAG’s President, Dr. Sameul Nkumbaan in a statement copied to Georgeweb.org stated that the National President of UTAG has through his actions and inactions have proven that he does not stand with the UTAG that the controversial Public Universities Bill be withdrawn from Parliament.

The controversial Bill which is before Parliament and waiting for approval when passed will give the President of Ghana the authority to appoint and dismiss Vice-Chancellors as well as choose more than half members of Public university councils in the country.

Not only the University Teachers Association of Ghana is against the passage of the bill but the minority in Parliament is also strong opposition to the bill encouraging parents to support the teacher’s movement to force the legislature to withdraw the Bill
