Here’s why Ghana’s Education Minister is called NAPO

The Member of Parliament for the Manhyia South Constituency, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh popularly known as NAPO is the country’s current Education Minister under the Akufo-Addo government.

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh took over as the Minister of Education in 2017 after the ruling New Patriotic Party government won the December 7, 2016, general elections leaving the National Democratic Congress in opposition.

The Minister of Information, Hon Kojo Oppong Nkrumah speaking at the Nations Building Updates on October 13, 2020, monitored by Georgeweb.org disclosed the meaning of the Manhyia South MP’s nickname.

According to the Member of Parliament for the Ofoase-Ayirebi constituency, the name NAPO means Nana Poku. Nana in English means King and Poku the short form of ‘Opoku’, a popular name in the Ashanti Region.

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah in his address said “Honourable Minister for Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, we like to call him NAPO. I know people wonder what is the correlation between Matthew and Opoku and Prempeh and NAPO…..he is the person of Nana Poku as we like to refer to”.
